THE INCLEMENT summer weather put paid to many of the league matches this weekend including the third XI match at Newbridge but the Dinas Powys first and second XI's both played.

Lewie Clarke took the firsts to league high flyers Crumlin, who look a class above anyone else in the division. When the hosts won the toss they had no hesitation in inserting Dinas. The villagers never really got going and were all out for a well below par 110 with only four players getting to double figures, Stuart Jones top scoring with 25. Crumlin had little difficulty in chasing the total down for the loss of just three wickets.

The seconds entertained mid table Brecon at Bryn y Don, although "entertained" is probably not the best word to use. With every weather forecast you could find predicting heavy rain from about 5pm, the skippers reached an agreement to shorten the game from the usual 45 overs to 35, which looked a sensible decision. Skipper Andy Ford won the toss and put Brecon in to bat. In a surprise move, spinner Rhys Lloyd shared the new ball, and pouched an early caught and bowled to put Brecon on the back foot. However, the Brecon number three Thomas then played with attacking intent for a solid 59. Wickets fell regularly but Brecon stuck at their task and despite 3-26 for Rhys Bradley, and a couple of wickets apiece for Reuben Mitchel and Ali Choudhary, Brecon got to 180 in the final over before losing their last wicket.

Turning straight round, Dinas set off like an express train with openers Awais Choudhary and Ali Choudhary (25) steaming to 37 inside the first six overs, before it all fell apart for the villagers. Miscommunication (a "there was never a run there" moment) led to Awais being run out. Red Todd-Bennett followed next ball, the unlucky recipient of a good fast yorker first ball up, and from that point it became a procession. Only skipper Ford (10) and Miles Wilton (12) got to double figures as tight Brecon bowling led to Dinas batters playing poor shots, and from 37-0 Dinas capitulated to 79 all out in 21.3 overs. With Rogerstone winning and going above the seconds, they now find themselves third from bottom and in a relegation dogfight with both sides below them still to come to Bryn y Don.

Next Saturday, August 5 the first hosts Creigiau at Bryn y Don at 1pm, the seconds travel to Blackwood and the thirds host Merthyr thirds at home on the Common at 1pm.
