WEDNESDAY'S match at Penarth Bowling Club saw an intrepid battle between two mixed teams from within the Rectory Road Club.

In a very close encounter the ladies' indoor captain’s side, led by Lynda Jones locked horns with the men's indoor team, captained by Ron Birkby.

The resulting clash was such a close run affair that no one was brave enough to predict the outcome as the advantage swung regularly in both directions.

In the final analysis, two of the rinks could only be separated by one single shot with the result 13-12 in both.

Strangely, the other two rinks also produced duplicate results (13-17) so honour was satisfied all round, Nick Thomas with Joan Phelps and Jacky Rosser staged a spirited comeback to snatch victory from Kath Jenkins ’rink after trailing in the early stages.

The ever reliable Bob Lewis aided by Pep Gent, Chris Davies and June Williams staged a late rally to thwart Phil Davies whilst Mike England, with Barbara Brown and Viv Duckers, swept to an early lead until the opposing threesome led by Lawrence Brooke staged a fighting comeback in the latter stages.

The final rink saw an epic battle between the two captain’s rinks where despite some excellent bowling from Bob Hill, Joan Lewis and Lynda, Ron with the help of Ken Brinkworth and Skip Betty Jones just eked out a single shot win.

An excellent seasonal tea, complete with mince pies, sausage rolls and Welsh cakes rounded off a very successful day.
