A BADMINTON club in Penarth has received more than £440 from a non-profit organisation to enable children from all backgrounds to enjoy the sport.

Legacy Leisure, a non-profit charitable organisation which operates leisure facilities on behalf of Parkwood Leisure, has donated £440 to the Vale and Penarth Junior Badminton Club at Penarth Leisure Centre.

The money has come from Legacy Leisure's Community Grant Fund and will help to pay for badminton coaches and the hiring of courts and equipment.

Commenting on the donation, one of the volunteer coaches, Ley Woolley, says: “The funding will help us to get this project started. Most of the children are from low income families so it’s great that, with this donation, we are able to offer free sessions.”

The Legacy Leisure Community Grant Fund was established to make grants available funds to individuals, clubs or groups for specific community-based activities that will improve quality of life or assist with the attainment of personal sporting or physical activity goals.

Eva Holmes, chairwoman of Legacy Leisure, explains: “Legacy Leisure is committed to providing a diverse and meaningful range of leisure and culture related activities for the local communities we serve.

"As a charity, Legacy Leisure is able to reinvest generated surplus funds into the facilities for developments and improvements.

"This also extends to the allocation of grants to benefit the health and wellbeing of local communities.

"We’re very proud to announce the latest recipients of the Community Grant Fund and support them in helping improve the lives of local people.

"Whether it’s increasing participation in a sport, kick-starting a new activity to support healthier lifestyles or providing training for coaches and instructors who can motivate and inspire others, we’re keen to encourage more people to get involved and send in their applications."

Applications for the Legacy Leisure Community Grant Fund are considered on a quarterly basis with applications running January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December.
