THIS week is the second and final part of our review of the year in Penarth sport in 2017

JULY

A young boxer from Penarth was completing his final preparations to represent Wales at the Junior Commonwealth Games.

Jay Munn, 18, was set to represent Wales in international competition for the first time in the Bahamas.

His uncle Neil Munn helped him prepare by training him at the Penarth Amateur Boxing Club.

Sully Centurions came away with a nail biting win over Dinas Powys.

They won by five runs which kept them in second place just seven points behind Crumlin.

Sully scored 229-5 but Dinas Powys finished on 224-9.

Penarth Cricket Club's second team were victorious on a weekend where all the other three sides' games were called off.

They hosted Bridgend Town and reached 268-7 from their 44 overs with Jack Thomas scoring 102 and James Erasmus 40.

Bridgend Town were bowled out for just 120 off 36 overs with all the Penarth bowlers picking up two wickets each.

Sully Spartans saw off GE Aviation in a T20 match.

Sully reached 166-5 with Ashish finishing not out on 46 and Morgan not out on 40.

GE mustered only 94 before being bowled out with Davies taking 3-24, Raf 3-30 and Tom T with 2-19.

AUGUST

The Dinas Powys Golf Club Championships were held.

Carolyn Jones emerged victorious in the ladies competition after the 36 hole competition.

Dale Sullivan took the division one title with Richard Hird and Andrew Jones winning divisions two and three.

Penarth's Windsor Bowling Club reached the final of the Alan Martin Cup.

A superb display by both rinks home against Llantwit Major.

Matthews, Gunter, Holmes and Woodcock won 22-9 and Flitney, Hudson, Close and McLeod won 17-11.

Penarth's cricketers suffered an agonising defeat in the final of the South Wales Premier Cricket League T20 competition.

Having beaten Mumbles in the semi final, they met Port Talbot Town in the final at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff.

Port Talbot Town reached 159-5 with Ali Bukkhari getting two wickets but despite 42 from skipper Jonathan Davies the bears fell just short losing by four runs.

Penarth RFC put on an impressive display against higher opposition in a pre season game against Caerphilly.

The seasiders travelled to Virginia Park but were beaten 35-24.

Despite this, former Welsh international who played for Penarth on the day said it was a pleasure and privilege to play with them.

Penarth were relegated from the South Wales Premier Division One after defeat to Cardiff.

Cardiff hit 236-7 with Tom Sidford the pick of the bowlers with 3-46.

Penarth were bowled out for 110 as Cardiff won by 126 runs.

SEPTEMBER

Sully Sports Ladies bowlers claimed the evening league title in an exciting finish.

They won their section by just one point ahead of Llantrisant.

Captain Mary Dare said it was a culmination of hard work and dedication by the ladies.

Dinas Powys RFC won their first home game since promotion.

They played Llantristant and ended up winners by 26-17 in front of a large crowd.

It meant the villagers took the full five league points.

Penarth RFC's youth team recorded an emphatic win away from home to start their league campaign.

They beat Canton by 53-0 giving them the ideal start to the defence of their title.

Penarth teenager Logan Nicol was getting ready to surf for Wales.

He was chosen to be part of the Welsh senior team heading to Norway to compete in the Eurosurf championships.

He said he "can't wait to experience the waves Norway has to offer."

OCTOBER

Old Penarthians began October with a hard fought win over Ferndale at Cwrt-y-vil.

It gave them their first win of the season as they ran out 20-12 winners.

The win denied the visitors a losing bonus point.

A record 79 boats launched out at Penarth regatta.

The oldest rowing event in Wales predates the town by 15 years.

This year Penarth Rowing Club ended a three-year wait for victory winning the mixed novice fours event.

Penarth Hockey Club went back top of their division with a win.

The first XI overcame visitors Ashmore at Stanwell School.

Ben Croxall and Laith El-Khatib were the scorers for the bears.

Penarth RFC managed a vital win to lift them up the table in awful conditions.

They beat Cilfynydd at home by 24-17.

The scorers included James Docherty with three tries and Rhys Morgan and Rich Bowen with one try each.

NOVEMBER

The fourth annual Windsor Bowls Club tour to Spain produced a win and a draw.

They played at the La Manga Club with a party of 59 playing a total of six games.

Penarth RFC pulled off an amazing comeback to win away at St Peters.

The seasiders ended up victorious 36-24 having been 19 points adrift at one stage.

The win took Penarth up to 10th place in the league table.

Penarth's first XI hockey team put on an impressive display as they beat Cheltenham 5-1.

Ben Croxall (3), Chris Baker and Andrew Willemite were the scorers for the bears.

Penarth RFC were victorious in the Mallett Cup quarter final.

They beat St Peters by 20-15 at the Athletic Ground.

Alex Thau bagged a brace with Tom Luck scoring the home side's other try.

DECEMBER

Penarth RFC's youth team beat Tondu youth team at the Athletic Ground.

Following the international break, the Penarth youngsters recorded a 34-26 win.

The Penarth RFC first team recorded a bonus point win over Abercynon.

Ritchie Bowen, Miles Jones, Tom Luck and Rhys Morgan went over as the Seasiders won 27-13.

Penarth Hockey Club's first XI went into double figures as they thrashed Landsdown.

The final score at Stanwell School was 15-1 as Sam Chick bagged six goals, Phil Lane three, Ollie Buckland two with one each for Richard Baker, Chris McCarthy, James Kidby and Tom Griffiths.

Penarth RFC ran out winners in this year's Boxing Day derby at home to Old Penarthians.

Thau's hattrick as well as tries from Doyle and Crothers were enough to see the Seasiders win 29-13.

Old Penarthians tries came from Boulter and Lewis.
