DINAS Powis Golf Club has welcomed their new golf professional Matthew Coombs who arrived at the beginning of March.

Matthew has taken over from Gareth Bennett who has given sterling service and commitment to the club for decades, which has been greatly appreciated by the committee.

Matthew will bring with him a new dimension to the golf club with innovative ideas in the pro shop and up to date coaching which will hopefully encourage both old and new members to buy into.

The only problem since the start of his tenure has been the inclement weather which has hampered proceedings both in the shop and on the course.

The final of the winter league knockout competition has been postponed due to the snow.

Simon Collins (celebrating his 50th birthday this week) and Jamie Hosgood beat Dai Gale and Esh Mahithralingram on the first extra hole in a pulsating contest to reach the showpiece match.

They will play Dale Sullivan and James Spear who defeated Geoff Haines and Paul Gibson.

All of the named pairs will also be fancying their chances in the Winter League proper when conditions improve and the playing can get back to normal.

Captain for the season Bob Wilson has already been stamping his authority both on and off the course since his appointment.

The widely respected Scot has been working tirelessly with the committee to promote the club in a positive way and plans put in place will come to fruition during the spring and summer.
