WING Alex Cuthbert says Wales must learn from their mistakes as they continue the build-up to next year’s World Cup against Fiji on Saturday.

The 6ft 6ins flyer crossed for one of Wales’ four tries to Australia’s three at the weekend but Warren Gatland’s men were again left to lick their wounds against one of the giants of the southern hemisphere.

The Wallabies took charge in the final stages to edge it 33-28 and seal a tenth-successive victory over their hosts.

“We’re all gutted,” said Blues star Cuthbert. “We’ve worked hard the past couple of weeks and we felt really good going into that game.

“We had a gameplan and I thought it worked pretty well but we just didn’t take some of the chances we made.

“We outscored the Wallabies and I don’t think many teams do that on a regular basis.

“We showed a lot of good attacking rugby but we switched off in the first half and gifted them a couple of tries.

“In the second half Australia threw everything at us and took the game out of our hands.

“It’s happened quite a few times to us as a squad now and we’ve gone through this experience before,” he added.

“We know the main game against Australia will be the one in the World Cup and that’s the one that counts at the end of the day.”

Saturday’s clash with Fiji at the Millennium Stadium gives Wales another chance to take on one of their World Cup group opponents.

It’s also another chance for Cuthbert to boost his confidence after a disappointing start to the season with the Blues.

“We have to concentrate on Fiji now and it’s good to be playing another team who we’ll be facing in the World Cup,” said the 24-year-old.

“It’s going to be a tough encounter but it’s about us putting on a performance.

“We have to focus on what we bring to the table and I think we’re strong enough to dictate the game and play in the right areas.

“We can’t force things because that’s exactly what they’ll want and we have to show patience.

“Personally it was good to score because I haven’t for a while at club level,” he added.

“It’s hard sometimes when you come into an environment like this where a lot of boys are playing well and I haven’t been playing to the standards I’ve set myself.

“It’s quite hard to build yourself back up and get that confidence back and hopefully, if selected, I can build on that on Saturday.”
