WALES’ record appearance holder Gethin Jenkins admits that time is running out for him on the big stage but he’s determined to stay at the top for as long as possible.

The 34-year-old will make his 50th RBS Six Nations appearance and his 112th Welsh cap against Scotland at Murrayfield on Sunday.

But, having seen fellow veteran prop Adam Jones eased out of the squad over recent months, Jenkins knows that he can’t go on forever in the red jersey.

But he remains a key part of Warren Gatland’s side as they attempt to bounce back from last week’s home defeat to England and build up to the World Cup later this year.

“I treat every game as if it’s my last, especially at my age,” said Jenkins.

“You know you haven’t got too many left so every game you play, you want to put the biggest performance you can in to keep the jersey for as long as you can.

“There are younger players snapping at your heels in every position and that shows we’re in a good place.

“Samson Lee hasn't trained too much because he’s had a few bumps but he is what he is,” he added.

“He’s a big man who loves the scrummaging part of the game, and we forget how young he is sometimes.

“He’s still coming through and he has years and years ahead of him if he stays fit.

“It’s been a bit of a change bringing boys through, there are a lot of boys up-front coming through.

“You have Rob Evans and Scott Baldwin who are pushing boys who have been around for a bit.”

Jenkins says Wales won’t be underestimating the Scots after a bad night against England at the Millennium Stadium last Friday.

“We have looked at the England game and are obviously disappointed,” he said. “Things didn’t go to plan for us second half and we will be looking to learn from it for Sunday’s game.

“It’s a brutal championship. Every game is like a cup final and we can take a bit of confidence from that. We want to put things right and get a win on the board.

“But Scotland were very impressive in the autumn. They performed well against some good teams and they have improved in lots of different areas.

“They have got a few different people running the game for them, a new 10 and some exciting backs so it’s going to be a tough challenge up there.”
