BACK ROW starlet Harri Keddie is in a bullish mood ahead of the World Rugby U20 Championship, as Wales attempt to complete a historic double in Manchester.

Wales are bidding to become world champions and Six Nations Grand Slam winners in the same year, something no team has ever managed before.

England won both tournaments in 2013 but lost to Ireland by a point in the Six Nations, scuppering their hopes of going on to claim the Grand Slam.

And Newport Gwent Dragons bruiser Keddie feels Wales can do it, claiming they have the ability to beat any team taking part in the competition, including New Zealand, winners on five occasions.

Wales beat the All Blacks 9-6 in the group stages four years ago, before losing to the Kiwis in the semi-finals – the two will meet again this year in a pool also featuring Ireland and Georgia.

“I think we can do some serious damage in the group,” stated Keddie, who scored two tries in the defeat of Italy in March which secured his country’s maiden Six Nations title. “We can really show what we’re capable of in attack.

“If you think about the Six Nations, before we played Ireland we had about 10-12 days’ preparation as a team, whereas now we’ve had extra time to sharpen up and really have a go at these teams.

“With the New Zealand game, we’ve just got to take it like any other. They are only human at the end of the day so hopefully we’ll go out there and play with everything we’ve got.

“On our day, when we play to our full ability, we’re capable of beating any of the teams there.

“It’s just about getting that consistency and clarity in our performances to make sure we can do that.

“We’ve got the raw materials to do it, it’s just up to us to put the hard work in and hopefully reap the rewards.”

Keddie, from Llanvaches, played in four of Wales’ five games as they finished sixth in the annual under-20 competition last year – their best finish was in 2013 when they were runners-up to England.

Jason Strange’s Wales side start their 2016 campaign on June 7, the day the tournament starts, when they face Ireland at the Manchester City Academy Stadium.
