WHITFIELD John Passed away peacefully but unexpectedly on December 19, during a full and joyous life. Loving and beloved husband of Sandra; devoted and proud father of Esther, Rachel and Lydia; adored and endlessly entertaining grandfather of Ellis, Llew, Carys and Twm; father-in-law to Jeff, Iwan and Mike and brother to Ann, Richard, Pauline and Gill. John had been Head of Modern languages at St. Cyres School; an avid bowler with Penarth Bowling Club; a lifelong member of the Methodist Church; an incurable prankster; and an ebullient lover of life. He was an extraordinarily talented linguist, who spoke French and Spanish fluently, taught Latin and Greek, and improvised flamboyantly with Welsh. Warm thanks to the staff of the Covid wards at University Hospital of Wales, who did their very best for him. Funeral for family only due to public health restrictions. A celebration of John's life, for the many people it touched, will be held at a later date.
