ONE of the largest stamp clubs in South Wales is hosting a fair this weekend.

Newport and Gwent Philatelic Society, which has more than 40 members, will hold the stamp fair between 10am and 4pm, at Graig Community Centre in Bassaleg, on Saturday.

There will be hundreds of stamps and postcards on display, including rare ones, and dealers available at the event to discuss, buy, and sell stamps.

Last year the event celebrated 70 years since the club's inception, which attracted many and led to six new members signing up to the club.

"Last year was really well attended," said club chairman, Roy Bentley.

"I was surprised how many people in the area collect stamps. We found that lots of people had collections and didn't know what to do with them or who to talk to about them.

"Many people weren't aware our club existed, but came along last year, and are still coming now."

Newport and Gwent Philatelic Society is open to all ages, with members age ranging from 10 to 80, and has fortnightly Wednesday meetings, at Newport Civic Centre, between 7pm and 9pm.

Entry to their stamp fair is free, and there will be refreshments on offer and areas for people who want to chat with other collectors.

Everybody is welcome, whether they've been collecting all their life or are just curious about the hobby.

"We had a guy who saw the fair promoted last year, so got in touch," added Mr Bentley.

"He had no knowledge of stamps at the time, but he was interested in music. Now he collects music themed stamps, comes to our meetings, and he's like a dog with a bone.

"It's a fun interest and a great way to make new friends."
