You don’t need Kim Kardashian’s bottom to break the internet: all it takes is for a former member of One Direction to sign a solo record deal and use the hashtag #RealMusic.
Zayn Malik, 22, who left the band in March, has signed with RCA Records – but his tweet about the deal was taken by many as a dig at One Direction for not making so-called “real music”.
One Direction fans are heartbroken, supportive, confused and optimistic in equal measure. Here’s their take on the whole thing.
Some were completely thrown about how to react.
Others were furious about the apparent #RealMusic insult
Especially as Zayn had previously said he wanted to leave the band to be a “normal 22-year-old”.
However, others leapt to his defence, especially after he retweeted a fan who gave an explanation on his behalf.
…While others took to Twitter just to express their support.
