PENARTH Songwriters’ Circle is back with another great night featuring Emily Barker, John Lewis and Gitta de Ridder at All Saints Church Hall, Victoria Square, Penarth.

Penarth Songwriters' Circle will present an international mix of song-writing talent on Friday, April 24 as Australian songbird Emily Barker will take to the stage alongside Gitta de Ridder from The Netherlands and Penarth’s own John Lewis.

Emily Barker is the award-winning songwriter and performer of the theme to BBC TV’s Wallander starring Kenneth Branagh. Her music is a blend of roots influences from country to English folk via 60s pop, usually wrapped in the rich string arrangements and harmonies of her band The Red Clay Halo.

Since moving to the UK from Australia in 2002, Emily’s clear, expressive voice, charismatic stage presence and the depth of her songwriting has helped her become a favourite amongst BBC Radio.

Her new album is a collection of stripped back, solo renditions of her songs, recorded live to tape at Toerag Studios in London with Grammy-winning producer Liam Watson (The White Stripes - Elephant).

A prolific and critically acclaimed songwriter of the highest order, she is a regular collaborator with some of Nashville’s best writers as well as performing with big UK names like Frank Turner on tours that included Wembley Stadium and the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony.

John Lewis' calibre is well established not only in his native Penarth but around the world. From his early days with Welsh Rockabilly legends The Rimshots with whom he recorded several albums and won a 'British Country Music Award - Album of the Year'.

He also fronted Johnny Bach and the Moonshine Boozers, alongside Imelda May guitarist Darrel Higham.

His dexterous guitar picking and distinctive vocal style gives American roots, rock'n'roll, country and rockabilly a unique Welsh twist while keeping that original spirit alive. This performance will showcase songs from his forthcoming debut solo acoustic album.

Born and raised in The Netherlands Gitta de Ridder writes songs that create a world full of atmosphere, feelings of joy, sadness and wonder. Her delicate and sensitive voice is immediately beguiling and seductive drawing you into a world of beauty and pure human emotion.

At 18 she moved away from home to study vocals and songwriting at The Rock-academy in Tilburg, a journey that took her from the Netherlands to Germany, Italy, Greece, Ireland and the UK ending up in London in 2008.

After a journey of musical soul-searching in several bands she returned to her strengths as a solo singer and songwriter. Inspired by artists such as Ane Brun and Anais Mitchell her ‘Come Find Me’ EP shares a similar spellbinding charm.

Tickets cost £8 in advance and £10 on the door and are available from Pencerdd Music, Station Approach, Penarth and Spillers Records, Cardiff.

Performances start at 8.15pm and for more information visit facebook.com/PenarthSongwritersCircle.
