LE BISTRO Jazz is a new initiative bringing a different jazz duo to Penarth every month.

Restaurateur Cheryl Day is putting on the event in Penarth’s Washington Buildings in conjunction with music promoter Jazz Live Cymru.

The evenings will be held on a Friday every month with the first performance on Friday, May 20.

For the first event violin and guitar musicians Kostas Zykos and Geraint Rees will perform from 8pm.

Kostas is a music teacher and postgraduate student at Royal Welsh College, Cardiff and was born in Athens, he began playing violin as a child and later trained in classical music, graduating from the conservatoire in Greece and gaining his experience on stage.

After 10 years, he began to move towards jazz, more recently coming to Wales to study. He has performed with many exceptional jazz names, and played concerts across the cities of Europe.

Geraint is a young up and coming musician on the South Wales scene. A resident of Cardiff, he is often to be seen in jazz line-ups from Pontypool and Torfaen to Brecon and Cardiff.

Most recently, he was part of the trio for violin maestro Sarah Smith at her performance in Cafe jazz in the city. A jazz musician, Geraint plays mainstream and standards-based jazz, solo style and ballads as well as “gypsy” jazz themes.

Together, Kostas and Geraint will play a selection of up tempo “gypsy” jazz numbers as well as Latin and jazz classics.

The evening is free to customers dining in the restaurant.
