THE renovation of Albert Road Methodist Church has been completed – and it’s been given a big thumbs up by members of the local community.

Retaining the original stonework, slate, stained-glass windows, and ceiling, the final touches were being put to the remodel last week, after just seven months.

The former church now provides a collection of individual townhouses and apartments, from developers XB Properties, with residents and other interested parties invited to see the work first hand at a special open day on Saturday.

Among those eager to assess the work at the site – a designated county treasure – were representatives of the Penarth Civic Society who were quick to commend a splendid job.

Committee member Graham Robertson said the renovation would even be awarded a civic award in the form of a special plaque.

“They have carried out a very successful conversion and have made a special effort to maintain and improve the quality of the local environment,” he said.

“We are most impressed and feel they deserve to be commended.”

The centrepiece of the redevelopment is Magnus, a threebedroom, three-storey residence, which provides a versatile living space and comes complete with its own bell tower and roof garden – offering 100- mile views as far as Brecon and Somerset.

For sale under the executive branch of Peter Alan Estate Agents, PA Black, sales manager Debra Lawday called the remodel truly stunning.

“It’s a superb example of modern day renovation, carefully carried out to retain the original feel and exterior of the building, with a beautifully fitted and designed residence of character inside.

“It’s very impressive and the feedback we have had so far indicates that the considerable number of residents who showed up on Saturday think the same.”

St Augustine’s Ward councillor Lis Burnett also congratulated the developers.

“It’s a really good example of quality local craftsmanship on the right building,” she said. “I think the renovation reflects the skills available within our local community.”

Local resident and historian Alan Thorne said: “I despise seeing beautiful old buildings pulled down, so I think the fact the church has been preserved – and so tastefully – is great news for Penarth.”

Based at Avon House on Stanwell Road, XB Properties is owned by local property developer Simon Baston – responsible for the remodel of the flats above Windsor Arcade – and former New Zealand All Black, Xavier Rush.

Mr Baston said the Methodist Church project was all about finding a new use for an old space.

He said: “As expected, a high quality finish has been provided for a truly great building.

“It just shows what can be achieved with fantastic buildings like this when planners are open-minded and prepared to give developers a chance.

“There’s nothing like this in Wales.

“We hope it is a renovation the residents of Penarth will be proud of.”
