AN oil painting by Sir Kyffin Williams has sold for a Welsh record £50,000 at the inaugural Welsh Sale of Rogers Jones at their new local home.

It was a house record too for the fine art auctioneers who recently opened the saleroom at Llandough Trading Estate.

The world auction record price for a painting by Kyffin Williams is £57,600, set in 2005, shortly before the artist’s death and prior to the recession.

Auctioneer Ben Rogers Jones, who is the son of the firm’s founder and responsible for running the new saleroom, said the sale was one of his proudest moments.

"On one of the sunniest days of the summer so far, and despite a start that clashed with the kick-off of the Lions’ showdown with the Australians - a team with 10 Welshmen in it - the sale was a triumph," he said. "Our decision to open a saleroom in South Wales was clearly the right one.”

The record-setting painting was a snow-covered coastal view of a derelict farm near Aberffraw, close to the Sir Kyffin’s home, with the sun setting over the Irish Sea. It sold at the top of the pre-sale guide price to a private collector who left a commission bid.

The second highest price in the sale held on Saturday July 6 was an oil sold to a UK gallery on estimate for £30,000.

More than £245,000 was raised in total.

A 17th century William & Mary oyster veneered kingwood cabinet on chest from the home of the Sir (Michael) Osmond Williams of Penrhyndeudraeth, sold for £15,000, at the inaugural sale at the saleroom on June 29.

It followed a successful launch party when the building was opened by the Archbishop of Wales, the Most Reverend Dr Barry Morgan.

Dr Morgan said Rogers Jones was one of the most reputable auctioneers in Wales.

Entries of pictures by Welsh artists or Welsh subjects are now invited for the next Welsh Sale on September 28.

Thereafter, the biannual even will alternate with Rogers Jones’s North Wales saleroom in Colwyn Bay.
