A PENARTH chef, restaurant and cafe have scooped honours at a Welsh food awards.

James Sommerin, ETC and Compass Coffee were all successful at the Food Awards Wales held in Cardiff's Marriot Hotel on Tuesday, May 30.

James Sommerin, whose restaurant is located on The Esplanade, was named chef of the year while Stanwell Road based restaurant ETC scooped the best restaurant of the year for south east Wales and Penarth Portway's Compass Coffee was named best cafe in Wales.

Voted for by the public, the prestigious Food Awards Wales celebrate and reward the very best in food hospitality.

Mr Sommerin said he was completely shocked by the award.

"I am overwhelmed that people have voted me chef of the year for Wales," he said.

"They say a chef is only as good as his team which is absolutely true and this award is for them too"

ETC owners Julia Bakshi and Alex Mules said: "We’re thrilled to have achieved this top award, especially so close to our first anniversary.

"We’ve achieved so much in our first year and this is just the beginning. This fantastic award is testimony to the hard work put in by our whole team who should be extremely proud of themselves. Thanks also to our customers and all who voted for us."

A spokesman for Compass Coffee said: "We are over the moon after winning best cafe in Wales at The Food Awards Wales 2017

"We took over Compass Coffee on January 1, 2016 and changed almost everything, including changing our suppliers to local and Welsh producers.

"We built the business up substantially over the first year and in December 2016 we completely refurbished the coffee shop.

"We have now got the business to a point where people are struggling to get a seat.

"We also have the best team ever working for us.

"We're just glad all of the team's efforts and hard work have finally been recognised."
