A MAN from Penarth is set to take on an endurance challenge to raise funds for his dad’s cancer treatment.

Luke Moghaddas-Davies, 31, of Cosmeston Drive, will be starting the ‘10 day Challenge 1954’ today (Thursday, August 17).

The name of the challenge was chosen because Mr Moghaddas-Davies’ dad, Mehdi Moghaddas was born in 1954.

Mr Moghaddas-Davies will be aiming to achieve a total number of 1954 made up of kilometres travelled on his bike, kilometres rowed and number of pullups.

Altogether the activities include a 170km bike ride around the Vale of Glamorgan, a 40km hike, a 20km row and more than 500 burpees and pull-ups with time limits for each challenge.

Mr Moghaddas-Davies’ dad was given a late diagnosis of bowel cancer last summer and is currently about to undergo his second round of chemotherapy having previously been declined treatment applications.

“I wondered what I could do to help,” said Mr Moghaddas-Davies.

“We are looking at every avenue for my dad and to raise awareness for other families.

“My dad is a healthy fit man so the diagnosis knocked us for six.

“I am fairly sporty and active so I thought I would do something a bit different.”

Mr Moghaddas-Davies, who works at Cardiff and Vale College, said his friends, families and work colleagues have been massively supportive and he has been overwhelmed by the amount of donations received.

Fellow staff members from the college will be joining him today for the rowing challenge in which Mr Moghaddas-Davies must complete his 20km in two hours with colleagues making up the further 30 km in three hours.

“Sponsorship has been excellent and we’ve raised £2,500 out of a £10,000 target so far,” he said.

“It is an unknown quantity but I will just keep my body ticking over day by day.”

He has been training in the college’s under armour strength and conditioning gym, Penarth Leisure Centre and riding around Penarth and Vale of Glamorgan since May in preparation.

The funds are to pay for a PET scan, and cytoreductive surgery.
