A DETECTIVE spotted four Penarth teenagers in a car which had been stolen three days earlier, magistrates heard.

The paintwork, where the colour had been changed, was still wet and the car was carrying false number plates.

One of the defendants pleaded guilty to stealing the car which was valued at £150.

The other three pleaded not-guilty and the charge was withdrawn by police.

But the three teenagers did admit stealing a set of spark plugs, six dusters, a set of lamp bulbs, a tiger mascot and six gallons of petrol worth £5 3s. 6d.

The four all admitted the car was not insured against third party risks and three pleaded guilty to committing wilful damage to the vehicle amounting to £25. The teenager who pleaded guilty was remanded in custody for seven days for a medical report with a view to sending him to a detention centre.

The other three were placed on probation and ordered to pay compensation.

The magistrates hoped that they would realise what had happened up to date and a lesson learned.
