FOUR armed forces veterans are hoping a revamped Remembrance Sunday in Penarth will appeal to all.

Paul Todd formerly of the Welsh Guards, Kirk Chandler an ex-Royal Marine, Kevin Halborg an ex-Royal Artillery Commando and Paul Galsworthy an ex-navy diver have stepped up to try and freshen up the day which they say has been "in decline" over recent years.

They raised £1200 in just 48 hours on Facebook through local businesses buying supporter plaques.

These are displayed in a number of windows to show that the business is officially supporting the day on Sunday, November 12 this year.

Plans are in place for a military band to form part of the day's events.

They are also planning to move the event to a later time so it is easier for everyone to attend.

The current plan involves starting with the church service at All Saints from 11am-12.15pm before meeting for pre march refreshments at the church hall.

The parade will set off at about 1.30pm when the band is ready before the wreath laying and playing of the last post at around 1.45pm at the Garden of Remembrance in Alexandra Park.

The second leg of the parade will then begin at 2pm before falling out at about 2.15pm from where the event will move to the Ex-Servicemen's Club for the rest of the day for a buffet and live music from the Lewis Merthyr Band.

Mr Todd said they want to give the event an identity and make it fresh and more appropriate for Penarth.

"In recent years the parade has been in decline," he said.

"Three other veterans and myself have stepped forward to revamp the day.

"We want to get the people of the town to come out and educate the children.

"The day is looking to be a great success and we are looking for more supporters."

He said it is a growing thing and that the hope is that this year's event will build up to an even bigger event next year when the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War is marked and Remembrance Day falls on a Sunday.

"We want it to go on for a bit longer than previously. We are putting something in place for future generations," said Mr Todd.

"We want the younger soldiers to come out and march and fathers to encourage their sons to join."

"The event is completely self-sufficient with the money raised coming from small local businesses.
