THE Vale council is set to submit its final active travel route suggestions to Welsh Government.

At a cabinet meeting on Monday (November 6), members will vote to approve the routes which focus on walking and cycling

The Active Travel (Wales) Act (2013) places duties upon local authorities in Wales to map, plan for, improve and promote opportunities for active travel.

A 12 week consultation process on the maps closed on September 15 in which the council's Environment and Regeneration Scrutiny Committee, Community Liaison Committee and schools took part.

A total of 13 routes in Penarth, Llandough and Sully and 14 in Dinas Powys were assessed.

Those scoring 70 points or more were added to the existing route maps with those scoring 70 or less being included in the integrated network maps with additional improvements and investment required.

The four main corridors to Cardiff have all been identified as requiring improvements for cycling particularly, including the Dinas Powys Corridor, the Port Road Corridor (including to the west), the A48 and the Sully and Penarth Corridors.

A potential Penarth Headland Link has also been identified as a key route for inclusion.

The report states that walking and cycling routes are important to achieve sustainable accessibility and to deliver the reduction of single occupancy car movements, therefore having a positive impact on sustainability and climate change.

The deadline for submission to Welsh Government of the updated Existing Route Maps and the final Integrated Network Maps is November 3.

The maps have been provided to Welsh Government as draft documents in order to meet the deadline and to allow cabinet to either agree or amend the maps prior to the Welsh Government publication date later in November.

The walking and cycling routes identified in the maps show proposed routes identified by the public.
