THE by-election for the Sully and Lavernock Community Council triggered by former councillor Chris Thorne's resignation last month has been won by Steve Oaten.

Mr Oaten won yesterday's (Thursday, March 15) by-election with 345 votes, beating fellow candidate Graham Newton who received 169.

Two votes were marked as spoiled.

Proportional turnout in the election has not yet been confirmed, however it is believed to be less than 25 per cent of those eligible to vote.

Mr Oaten posted on social media after the announcement that he was "very much looking forward to the challenges ahead" and would "strive to do my best for our community."

An ex-police officer, Mr Oaten had pledged to improve community engagement between members of the public and the council, as well as looking to back the views of the public on proposals for new housing in the community.
