THE regional manager for Co-op food stores in Penarth has received national recognition for his work after being chosen to receive the ‘Be Yourself Always’ Co-op Award.

Michael Pengelly won the award - which aims to celebrate being true to yourself and leading from the front - after being nominated by colleagues, who described him as “passionate and honest”, and that he “always puts a positive outlook on every challenge, encouraging people to do the right thing for the longer term even when faced with easier options.”

He will receive his accolade at a special ceremony at the Co-op’s AGM this Saturday (May 19) which recognises colleagues who have brought “Being Co-op” to life and celebrates their achievements.

Colleagues said Mr Pengelly helped to improve business in the Principality by involving colleagues, being honest about what needed to be put right and by being himself with everyone. Judges were impressed by the impact the regional manager's leadership had on the culture of the region and his persistence and passion in turning things around.

Mr Pengelly said: “Over these last three years I’ve been encouraged to be myself which has been brilliant. Co-op is changing and I’m glad to be a part of that.”
