THIS week’s From the Archive section shows a picture of the Italian Gardens on the promenade in Penarth from 1971 in what appears to be spring time. Also, spot the women sat on a bench with the words “wet paint” on the ground surrounding it.
The Italian Gardens is a formal, terraced, rock garden facing the Penarth Esplanade, and was created in the mid 1920s as one of several initiatives to improve the Penarth seafront.
Over the years, the gardens appeared on a variety of postcards with a variety of names, including the Promenande Garden, Esplanade Gardens and the Rock Garden to name a few.
However, it is now known as the Italian Gardens.
Thanks to Philip Dawson and Andrew Coslett for this image.
