THE GATES at Alexandra Park have been restored to pristine condition thanks to a generous donation from the Earl of Plymouth.

The Penarth Society wrote to the Earl, who generously sent a donation of £1,000.

Historically, the Earl of Plymouth had a large estate in Penarth - including Windsor Gardens, which was given up for public use in 1932.

The Penarth Society Committee felt that a suitable use for the money would be the refurbishment of the Rectory Road gates to Alexandra Park.

Last week the restored gates were re-hung, after painstaking restoration by the Glasgow company that had cast them 100 years before.

Now a modern lock will make it easy to close the park at dusk.
