THERE will be a tasty line-up for this year’s Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG) Penarth Food Festival at the end of next month.

Community based environmental organisation GPG has announced the return of its annual Penarth local food Festival.

This year’s festival is taking place on Sunday, September 23 at the Kymin on Beach Road, a location popular with both traders and festival goers.

First held in 2011, the event fast became a popular and much anticipated fixture on the town’s annual calendar, attracting large crowds of locals and visitors.

The festival aims to highlight the vast range of quality independent food producers and businesses in the area and provide a unique showcase for the very best of local produce. This year’s mouth-watering line up will include all the regular favourites plus some tasty new additions.

Visitors will be able to sample a wide range of fresh local produce such as cheeses, breads, preserves, locally brewed beers and ciders, all provided by local businesses including Windsor Fruit Stores, A Bit of a Pickle and many more.

There will also be a wide variety of hot food on offer from local restaurants and caterers including The Crepe Escape and Restaurant James Sommerin. Locally produced bacon and sausages will be available from Old Cogan Hall Farm and Glam Lamb will be returning with their locally produced lamb burgers. Vegetarians and vegans will also be well catered for with tasty offerings from the always popular Parsnipship.

Festival organiser Anthony Slaughter said: “We’re thrilled with the ongoing success and popularity of the food festival. The day is a real community event and a great celebration of local food.”

For GPG the festival also provides an important opportunity to raise awareness of sustainable and environmental issues and highlight other GPG community projects. This year the group’s Shop Penarth (SP) loyalty card scheme will be marking the anniversary of the scheme’s relaunch at last year’s festival and unveiling some exciting new developments on the Shop Penarth stand.

Originally introduced in 2010 the SP scheme aims to support Penarth’s independent businesses and boost the local economy by encouraging customer loyalty. The scheme also helps to cut carbon emissions by reducing the number of car trips for out of town shopping.

Also present at the event will be the Plastic Free Penarth campaign with a stand highlighting the issue of plastic pollution and offering examples of sustainable alternatives.

The Food Festival is free and open from 11am to 4pm.
