THIS week’s From the Archive is an interesting image showing the construction of the locks at the Penarth end of Cardiff Bay Barrage.

Work began in 1994 and was finally completed in1999, shortly afterwards the barrage was operational.

The impounding of the River Taff and Ely created the two square kilometre (490 acre) freshwater lake. At the time it was one of the largest civil engineering projects in Europe costing more than 400 million pounds.

The contract was a joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Costain.

There are now three yachting marinas associated with the barrage, Penarth Marina, Cardiff Yacht Club and Cardiff Bay Yacht club.
