NEWPORT County AFC muscleman David Pipe wouldn’t mind getting hold of Sergio Aguero’s Manchester City shirt at the full-time whistle tomorrow – but he’d prefer Pep Guardiola’s scarf.

Pipe will probably have to settle for a place on the bench as the Exiles look to cause arguably the biggest shock in FA Cup history when they face Premier League leaders in a sell-out fifth-round tie (kick-off 5.30pm).

City boss Guardiola, who is yet to get his hands on the famous trophy, saw his side exit last season’s competition against Wigan Athletic, then of League One, at the same stage.

County defender Pipe, a quarter-finalist with Bristol Rovers in 2008, won’t be thinking about a special memento of the occasion until the game is over.

He believes the unique Rodney Parade experience will affect the visitors in the same way it has the players of Leeds United, Spurs, Leicester City and Middlesbrough.

And despite the resources Guardiola has in his squad, Pipe insists County won’t be overawed by the multi-million pound team in their sights – which may or may not include the on-fire Aguero.

“They are one of the best teams in the world, but we won’t be scared of them in any way, we haven’t got that type of mentality,” said the 35-year-old.

“All of the things out there (at Rodney Parade) are going to affect them, just like it affected Middlesbrough.

“Regardless of the pitch, the boys had that influence and endeavour, and we carved Middlesbrough open a number of times, it wasn’t just because of the pitch.

“It’s a combination of everything and it’s something for the whole town to look forward to.”

He added: “We need to nullify City the best we can because they are one of the superior teams in the Premier League.

“Hopefully we can perform like we did (against Middlesbrough) and win, lose or draw, put that type of effort in so everyone on the pitch and off it, and around the town, will be proud.”

When asked what he thought City’s star names would think of County’s home ground, he said: “I guess you’d have to ask them that.

“If they gave you a truthful answer, I don’t think many of them would choose to play here if they had the choice, which plays in our favour.

“But we have to do our thing as well, it’s not a case of thinking they won’t like the pitch and let it happen, you also have to have an influence on the game.”

And as for that piece of neckwear he has an eye on, he commented: “I’m fond of a scarf myself so I think I might ask Pep for his rather than ask one of the players for their shirt.

“I’d wouldn’t mind Aguero’s shirt, but I’d get more wear out of Pep’s scarf.”
