WALES hooker Elliot Dee's successor as Argus Dragon of the Year will be named at a night honouring Gwent's sporting heroes in May.

Dee, currently chasing a Grand Slam, landed the honour last season after a stunning campaign in which he led the charge for the Rodney Parade region to break through into the Test squad.

The front rower is among the leader contenders for this year's honour, sponsored by Monmouthshire Building Society.

A public vote is currently open and the winner will be named at the South Wales Argus Sports Awards at Chepstow Racecourse on Wednesday, May 22.

It has been a tough season for the Dragons but a number of individuals have stood tall.

Dee has had another strong campaign and has grown on the international stage, establishing himself as Ken Owens' deputy.

The hooker from Newbridge has had to fight for his 2 jersey at the Dragons with Richard Hibbard making a big impact after his move from Gloucester.

The former Wales and Lions forward, 35, has made 20 appearances, deputised for captain Cory Hill and produced plenty of his trademark big hits.

South Wales Argus:

Aaron Wainwright has been in the thick of the action for both club and country.

The 21-year-old flanker from Bassaleg was at the heart of the encouraging festive derby performances and has forced his way into Warren Gatland's matchday squad.

Regional regulars Adam Warren, Brok Harris and Lloyd Fairbrother have once again been consistent performers for Ceri Jones' side while Ollie Griffiths put in some dynamic displays before injury ended his season.

Voting for the Dragons and Newport County player of the year awards is at southwalesargus.co.uk/sportsawards.

Nominations for a variety of categories can be made on that website – the deadline is Wednesday, March 22.
