EBBW Vale winger Toby Fricker has landed a sensational move to big-spending English Premiership side Bristol on a two-year contract.

The 23-year-old, who came through London Scottish’s academy, has impressed for the Steelmen since signing in the summer of 2017 after being recommended to the club following performances for Welsh Academicals.

Fricker was named as Principality Premiership newcomer of the year for 2017/18 and his exploits earned selection for Wales in the Rugby Europe Sevens last summer.

The winger, who qualifies for Wales through his father from Builth Wells, has been snapped up by Bristol.

An injury to Newport-born Ryan Edwards means that he has made the move immediately to help Pat Lam’s side attempt to steer clear of a relegation dogfight.

The bright prospect will now swap Eugene Cross Park for Ashton Gate, where he will join former All Blacks superstar Charles Piutau as a back three option.

South Wales Argus:

Head coach Lam said: “Toby has earned his opportunity to test himself in a fully professional environment. His performances in the Welsh Premiership have impressed us and he shows the attributes to be a quality winger.

“With Ryan unavailable for the rest of the campaign, Toby gives us some added depth in that position. He’s a young man with a positive attitude and a desire to learn.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Toby on board and integrating him into the Bears environment.

“He is a young Englishman hungry for an opportunity and I believe our rugby programme will help him reach his dreams.”

Bristol currently sit ninth in the table, 10 points clear of bottom club Newcastle thanks to a stunning late win against Northampton.

The Bears are next in action in a key clash against strugglers Worcester on Saturday, March 23.
