HUNDREDS of retailers in the Vale of Glamorgan could soon see their business rates cut.

The Welsh Government announced in December 2018 that an extra £23.6m was being made available to help high street businesses and other retailers with their non-domestic rates.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council was allocated £1.13m of that money to help the county’s businesses.

The council will launch a scheme which will provide support of up to £2,500 towards business rates for retail properties which have a rateable value of up to £50,000.

Some businesses would not even have to apply for the rate relief as the council would apply the discount automatically.

But other business which may qualify for assistance would be sent an application form by the council to determine their eligibility.

The council estimates 618 businesses in the region could qualify for the discounts.

The council’s cabinet approved the plans on April 15 and will come into effect if the full Vale of Glamorgan Council approves. The next meeting of the full council is on May 1.
