CHILDREN have been refused places at almost a third of Vale of Glamorgan’s primary schools because they’re oversubscribed for the next academic year.
A total of 11 of the Vale’s 36 community and voluntary-controlled primary schools had to turn away applications because demand for places exceeded supply.
Gwenfo Church in Wales Primary was the most oversubscribed in the county with 25 refusals, followed by Cogan Primary, which had to turn away 21 children.
Oversubscribed primary schools in the Vale had to refuse 115 applications in total – but those who missed out have been offered some of the 233 vacant places that are still available at other schools.
The council says 66 of the applications refused were for children who live outside the Vale of Glamorgan.
A total of 30 children in the Vale are currently without a school offer as they didn’t get any of the places they applied for. The council says this was “mainly as a result of submitting only one school preference for an out of catchment school”.
Out of the 1,360 applications for community primary and voluntary controlled schools, 91% – 1,237 – got their first choice.
