FROM the Archive this week features a photograph of the German Seaman's Mission, 100 Kingsland Crescent, Barry Dock.

Rev. Julius Achilles a Lutheran Minister ran and lived in the German Mission to Seamen on Kingsland Crescent, Barry Dock in the early part of the 20th Century.

His name became well known at the time for his ministrations of convicted murdered Eric Lange a German citizen who had murdered the landlord of the Bridgend Hotel, in Pentre.

He had broken into the Hotel early on a Sunday morning to burgle it, but was interrupted by John Jones the landlord who he stabbed.

Rev. Achilles opened a petition at Kingsland Crescent to gather signatures in favour of a reprieve of the death sentence.

His petition was handed to the Home Secretary.

However, it was unsuccessful and Rev Achilles acted as chaplain to the execution of Eric Lange on Wednesday, December 21 1904.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
