ALBERT Primary celebrated World Book Day at school and across the road in Belle Vue Park.

The classes moved around the school and park, stopping at different locations to hear different storytellers – family, governors and friends of the school, many in full costume.

Shelley Barrett was dressed as Mole from the Wind in the Willows. She said: “I loved it. The children love being read to and I love doing the voices! I look forward to it every year, choosing the book and costume.”

Author Elly Griffiths read extracts from her new book ‘A Girl Called Justice’, and shared insights about writing a story.

At the end of the day, on Thursday, May 23, the children and parents were able to buy books from two pop-up book stalls on the playgrounds, organised by Griffin Books.

The Albert Road media monitors said: "A big thank you to Mel and her team for helping us and the book stalls proved to be a big hit with everyone.

"It was a glorious day and the sun truly shone for all the children and adults who participated in this event.

"World Book Day has really inspired the children to get creative, have a go at writing their own stories and also read new books

"Albert Primary School would like to say a big thank you to everybody who helped make the day such an overwhelming success!"

On Thursday, May 23, Albert Primary celebrated World Book Day at school and across the road in Belle Vue Park, Penarth.

The classes made their way around the school and Belle Vue Park, stopping at different locations to hear stories told by a number of different storytellers.

The storytellers were made up of parents, governors, grandparents and friends of the school.

The children listened to a variety of stories, some in Welsh, and with many of the storytellers in full costume.

Shelley Barrett was dressed as Mole from the Wind in the Willows. She said: "I loved it. The children love being read to and I love doing the different voices! I look forward to it every year, choosing the book and my costume. Obviously it helps that I have The Children’s Costume Studio at The Talent Shack so have access to endless bits and bobs. I was inspired to read Wind in the Willows as the Shelley Norton Stage School (that’s me) is putting it on next month at The Talent Shack."

Favourite stories included a dragon, Mary Poppins, an exciting adventure with Toad and some very marvellous medicine.

The school managed to get author Elly Griffiths in for the day, working with the Year 5 and 6 children.

She read extracts from her new book ‘A Girl Called Justice’, and shared insights with the pupils about how to write a good story.

At the end of the day, the children and parents were able to buy books from two pop up book stalls on the playgrounds, organised by Griffin Books.
