NEWPORT County AFC have confirmed the season-long loan signing of defender Danny McNamara from Millwall.

The 20-year-old right-back is the third player to swap The New Den for Rodney Parade this summer, following the permanent signings of goalkeeper Tom King and centre-back Lazar Stojsavljevic.

McNamara was the captain of the Championship club’s under-23 side last season and also enjoyed senior experience during loan spells with National League outfits Dover Athletic and Havant & Waterlooville.

He impressed in a 45-minute appearance for County during last weekend’s friendly win at Hungerford Town, when he was listed as a trialist.

McNamara could make his competitive debut in Saturday’s League Two opener at home to Mansfield Town, subject to international clearance.

And County manager Michael Flynn is pleased to get the deal done before the first game of the season.

“Danny’s come in from Millwall and he’s highly thought of there,” said the Exiles boss.

“I’ve got a good relationship with [Millwall boss] Neil Harris, who I played with [at Gillingham] and we’ve kept in contact.

“Neil speaks very highly of Danny and he gives us back-up in that position.

“I’ve always said I want competition for places and that’s another part of what I’m looking to do.”

The defender agreed a new contract at Millwall in May and is looking to push on while at County.

“I am over the moon,” he said. “I'm delighted to meet the lads and I can't wait to get going. I have had several loan spells at lower level but I feel like I am ready now for EFL football.

"I'd like to think, firstly and mainly, I am a defender so I'd like to think I am good one-against-one.

“I like to win my aerial duels and going forward I think I have got a good cross as well and I like to get forward.

"I can't wait to get going. The lads have been brilliant and I have settled in well. I am really looking forward to Mansfield this weekend."

McNamara is Flynn’s 10th summer signing following the arrival of goalkeeper King, defenders Stojsavljevic, Kyle Howkins, Marvel Ekpiteta, Daniel Leadbitter, George Nurse and Ryan Haynes, and forwards Corey Whitely and Tristan Abrahams.

He will compete with former Bristol Rovers man Leadbitter for the right-back spot, while central defender Ekpiteta can also play on the right.

Meanwhile, following an issue with a third-party supplier that prevented season tickets from being available for collection today as originally planned, all County season tickets will now be available to collect from the Kingsway Centre club shop from 9am on Thursday morning.

Supporters can collect their season tickets from 9am until 5pm tomorrow and Friday at the club shop.

On Saturday they can be collected from the Rodney Parade ticket office from 10am until kick-off at 3pm against Mansfield.

Season tickets that have been purchased for postal delivery were posted last night.

Season tickets remain on general sale, with savings of up to £139 available. Full details of prices, savings and benefits can be found online at newport-county.co.uk
