THE Memo Arts Centre in Barry has launched a new campaign aimed at recruiting 100 volunteers in 2019.

The venue, with its newly appointed volunteers and participation co-ordinator, Megan Merrett and Dr Jane Salisbury, a Memo Arts Centre trustee, welcomed a small group of newly recruited volunteers to their first induction session on Friday, July 26.

Alongside their training, the six new volunteers discovered that some 20.1 million individuals gave “gift time” to organisations across the UK, in 2017 to18, and how volunteering can play a major part in well-being and health.

The Memo hopes to share their talents in order to support the Memo’s events programme and to help look after the Gladstone Road venue and the surrounding grounds which need attention.

The Memo Arts Centre is a registered charity that receives funding, but works to generate 63 per cent of its turnover.

But, like many arts organisations, the Memo needs more hands on deck to support its growing programme, and community projects, and to help deliver the Memo’s ambitious plans for the future.

The Memo delivers an arts and cinema programme for all to enjoy and this year the Memo is working in partnership with the Vale of Glamorgan and Barry Town Councils to support the delivery of the Barry Making Waves project.

This three-year project is focused on supporting Barry’s development to create a greater sense of place.

The project has received funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Great Place Scheme and is helping to support the new volunteer scheme based in the Memo.

A Memo spokeswoman said: “If you have some time to share come and sign up to be a volunteer.

“The Memo wants as many as possible to join in the fun and share in the pride of seeing Barry develop its arts and heritage across the town.

“As a Memo volunteer you will be able to share your talents, receive training, meet new friends, develop new skills.

“With a range of volunteer roles available, the arts centre is calling on the people of Barry to join its volunteer team whatever your skills might be.

“From gardening to set building, selling popcorn to sewing, or even simply sharing your smile to make our audiences and users feel extra welcome and cared for during their visits.

“Join today to help make Barry a great place to live, work and play.”
