A CAFE in Penarth is hosting an ‘Open Mike Night’ with a Welsh Rugby legend.

Willmore’s 1938 on Stanwell Road, Penarth will hold the charity event on August 16 together with international scrum-half Mike Phillips.

Other attendees will include Casualty actor Charlie Day.

Tickets are £25, with music, food and drink on arrival, and the café hope to raise £2,000 for Breast Cancer Care.

“My partner Charlotte’s mum suffered with breast cancer last year so it’s very close to our hearts,” said co-owner of Willmore’s Matt Holland. “Charlotte did the London Marathon for it and Mike’s an ambassador for Breast Cancer Care, as well as a regular.

“Mike said he’s not gonna sing at the event. He is. I’m gonna make him. Maybe Calon Lan.”

Mr Phillips said: “I’m limited on time and always want to do things to help, raise awareness and money. Willmore’s came up with a great idea and it should be a very enjoyable evening, a good singalong with great prizes. I’m very excited. And alright, I might sing Calon Lan – if it gets money in the tins.”

Willmore’s will hold a silent auction and raffle, with prizes including tickets to the rugby, nights at the Vale Hotel, local artist’s paintings, and donations from local businesses.

Tickets are limited. To purchase, call Willmore’s on 02920709600 or visit the café.
