DIY SOS is coming to Blackburn to transform a church for a charity and need trades people to help.

Nick Knowles and interior designer Gabrielle Blackman at The Big Build BBC Children in Need Special are headed to Blackburn to work with children’s charity, Nightsafe from Tuesday, September 3 -12.

The team will work to convert a rundown church hall at St. Silas’s Church into accommodation for vulnerable children.

Mark Millar, Build Manager for DIY SOS, said: “It’s important to us to do this because these are vulnerable young people who need support and guidance.

“We want to provide a place for them to be safe, and when they’re 18 they will be moved into permanent accommodation.

“We still need people of all trades including carpeting and joiners to help with the build.

“This is a job for anyone that wants to help these young people and make a difference."

Jan Larkin, CEO and Carol Greenwood funding co-ordinator from Nightsafe, both spoke about the impact it would have on the young people.

Mrs Larkin said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for us to have been chosen, because it will help so many young people still of school age, who are struggling in their lives.

“It will help them become safe and able to start to live independently in the future.

“It really will make a massive difference to all of them.

“Some of them at the age of 16 are still in school and it can be difficult when they are not stable and need our help.”

The current Nightsafe accommodation centre offers immediate access for young people who have nowhere else to go, but the centre is no longer big enough to cater for the growing demand in the area.

The DIY SOS still need volunteers and tradespeople for nine days to transform the interior of the building into short-term accommodation for vulnerable 16-18-year olds.
