FROM the Archive this week features a photograph was taken by Charles Nesbitt - a photographer of 61, Holton Road, Barry, in around 1902.

Sadly there is no name for this baby, no doubt dressed in her best clothes for the photograph.

Growing up in Barry at this time had its risks especially for children.

The town medical officer, Dr Neale delivered his annual report on the health of the town in 1902.

The estimated population was 27,000.

The most densely populated area was Barry Dock with 8,288 people.

A total of 987 babies had been born in Barry the year before.

An epidemic of scarlet fever broke out in 1901 and 1902.

There were also risks of catching small pox and typhoid fever.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
