FROM the Archives this week features a look back at the Welsh boxing senior final at Penarth Marina in March 1970.

Original reports from Friday, March 27, 1970, describe the disappointment of fans in the town who were unable to get tickets for the event which was a major sell-out.

Officials of the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association (WABA) expressed regret that many people were unable to get in to see the event which proved that the sport in Wales is “in a very healthy state indeed”.

A spokesman said: “It does prove to us, however, that amateur boxing in Penarth is still growing, and we feel confident that those who were fortunate enough to see the eleven contestants came away as very satisfied customers”.

Funded by Sport Wales, WABA is the national governing body for amateur boxing in Wales.

It is a member of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA).

Pictured are Chuck Jones, from Swansea, and Griffith Roberts, from Bangor, North Wales, competing in the light-heavyweight title battle at the Welsh Boxing Finals in Penarth.
