A PENARTH woman serving with Wales’ only Royal Auxiliary Air Force Squadron is helping the fight against coronavirus.
Former St Cyres pupil, Sergeant Cathy Sharples is part of a team from 614 (County of Glamorgan) Squadron which is currently running a drive-through testing centre in the Midlands.
Sergeant Sharples is commanding the mobile testing team, and said: "We all feel proud to stand by our NHS and civilian colleagues in the fight against coronavirus.
"It's great that we've been able to answer the call as a reserve squadron and help the country where we are needed."
The team consists of 12 personnel are operating in Tamworth at the moment but could be sent elsewhere in the region.
They are working in support of Operation Rescript - the military support for the UK’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
They began training in early June with the Army at Donnington and have been operational since 22 June.
The Cardiff-based squadron also has other members supporting the national effort in their civilian roles including working for the NHS, Police and Welsh Government.
