A SELF-EMPLOYED massage therapist has made a foray into the world of hair by shaving her locks for charity – raising more than £2473 so far.

Sharon Gulley, 48, who works at John Bruno, Glebe Street, in Penarth decided to Brave the Shave for Macmillan Cancer Support at Pickfords, on Penarth seafront, on Thursday, July 30.

Mrs Gulley, 48, said: “My own family and many friends have sadly witnessed the suffering experienced by loved ones due to cancer.

“Currently a dad of a very good friend of mine is suffering from terminal cancer and we know that Macmillan will be there to support both him and his family.

“I wanted to do something to raise awareness and financial support for the amazing care Macmillan provide.

“Their dedication to those whose lives are torn apart by cancer is truly remarkable.

“So, I decided to Brave the Shave for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“Huw Pickford and his team were absolutely amazing and provided us with a very efficient social distancing area.

“We would like to thank them for hosting a great evening, fabulous food and such friendly accommodating staff.

“My husband Mark had a banner made for the event.

“I did wonder if it might freak him out, me shaving my head, but he has been so encouraging and tells me how proud he is.

Around 35 family and friends attended the event and Mrs Gulley’s sister-in-law Bernadette, a hairdresser in Cardiff, did the actual shave.

“She was more nervous than me,” Mrs Gulley said. “A big thank you to her for being so brave too.

“It was wonderful that so many people made the effort to come along to the event and also the amount of money that has been raised.

“I do feel very privileged to have such amazing family and friends.

“My original target was £1000 which was achieved in just seven days, so I increased it £1500 and again achieved this and more.

“Currently the amount raised is £2473.”
