THE RNLI in Penarth were relieved to have “escaped” any calls on the weekend after an unusual four callouts in just one day on Friday.

The first two tasks were to a 26ft broken down yacht in the mouth of the Usk, followed by a smoking boat off the Cardiff foreshore. A quick tow back to safety and all was well, with volunteers back in position by 2.30pm.

A yacht then found itself in trouble as it got stuck in the mud but after some assistance were able to wait for the tide.

The fourth task of the day was to seven people and a child cut off by tide at Sully Island.

Penarth Coastguard who were also tasked to the scene tweeted: “RNLI Penarth launched to assist and check on the welfare of those on the island.

“After conversation and physical checks all persons were content to remain on the island until the causeway opens.”

Lifeboat Operation manager for Penarth’s RNLI, Jason Dunlop, said: “The volunteer crew members performed admirably on Friday.  A total of four calls in a single day is unusual, thankfully, but the fact we could cover all the shouts is testament to the eagerness and commitment of the crew."

Mr Dunlop also asked those heading to the coast over the weekend to be careful, and it seems his pleas were heard, with no callouts over the weekend.
