A PUB in Sully has said it will be contacting a man who says he experienced racism there over the weekend.

Julian Konten, a school teacher from Penarth, said he believes he – along with two friends Dale Miller and Chris Harper – were not allowed into the Captain’s Wife on Sunday because of their appearance.

The Captain’s Wife said they will not tolerate racism and will be investigating the matter.

Mr Konten said: “We stopped at the Captain’s Wife and asked if we could have a table outside only to be told they were fully booked, despite the tables outside being empty.”

The pub said the outside areas weren’t open for service over the weekend as the team are still getting used to operating under the Covid-secure measures.

Mr Konten said after he asked two white men behind him to try and get a table, they were successful.

“I asked the front of house why we weren’t offered a table and his reply was, ‘Due to social distancing laws we could only sit two people at a table of four seats because it would be too close to the table opposite’.”

Mr Konten said the episode showed “exactly why BLM (Black Lives Matter) exists”, and said it showed “systematic racism that needs to be eradicated”.

A post sharing the alleged incident has gained 3.6k shares on Facebook.

A spokesman for the Captain’s Wife said: “We take all claims of discrimination very seriously and do not tolerate any kind of abuse taking place within our pub.

“We reopened this weekend for the first time since lockdown and are operating under new Covid-secure measures, which include reduced numbers allowed to sit at tables to help our guests and team social distance within the pub. However, we are investigating the guest’s claims with the team and will be reaching out to discuss this with the guests involved.

“We pride ourselves on being a welcoming, open and friendly pub and we’re really sorry that the three guests have left feeling this wasn’t the case when they visited.”
