THE Vale of Glamorgan once again produced a set of AS and A-level outcomes that has seen pupils performing better than Welsh and regional averages.

At A-level, nearly a third of all grades awarded were either A* or A, representing a five per cent improvement on 2019.

A hefty 82.2 per cent of entries gained A* to C grades, while 98.6 per cent of all grades were A* to E.

As far as individual schools are concerned, Llantwit Major Comprehensive recorded their best ever results and all students have secured a place at their first-choice university.

Both Cowbridge and Stanwell improved further on last year’s performance with almost 40 per cent of all grades either A* or A.

Stanwell School pupil, Joshua Slatter, 17, of Barry, achieved an A in physics AS level, and an A in maths.

He said: "It should actually be an A* because the WJEC exam board messed up the grading system.

"The maths A-level is the full A-level qualification because I am studying further maths next year.

"Studying this year has been a challenge because of the added pressure from teachers and the demands of bigger workload.

"It has been strange not sitting exams this year after working so hard but I feel that I will receive fair grades eventually that reflect my hard work.

He added: "In September, I will be entering my final year of education in Stanwell, year 13, where I will be completing the second half of my physics a level and the full further maths A-level.

"After this, I plan to go to university to study mechanical engineering in Bath, before pursuing a career as a motorsport engineer in Formula One."

At Barry sixth form, which includes Whitmore and Pencoedtre High Schools, all students achieved the level three threshold of at least of two grades A* to E.

Results for students at Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg were outstanding with all entries achieving a pass.

More than a quarter of all grades were either A* or A and three students secured places to study at either Oxford or Cambridge universities.

At AS-level, more than a quarter of grades awarded were an A while 71.4 per cent of grades awarded were A to C.

Vale council cabinet member for education and regeneration, Cllr Lis Burnett said: “After an extremely challenging and unique 12 months, and despite examinations not being sat, I’m absolutely delighted that students in Vale of Glamorgan have once again achieved outstanding AS and A-level results.

“I’d like to pass on my congratulations to all involved and also like to wish those students leaving our educational system every success for the future.

"These results suggest you can look forward with huge optimism.”
