PARKING problems near the Barry Goodsheds development are set to be addressed after the situation was flagged up in the first few days of it opening.

The Hood Road mixed-use scheme opened for retail, dining and leisure business on Wednesday, August 26, but cars have been parked along both sides of the road with visitors saying parking facilities are in adequate and the area poses a danger to motorists and pedestrians.

The Vale council said it was aware of the parking issue and was working to address it.

Commenting on the Goodsheds opening article on the Barry & District News Facebook site, Donna Atwell said: “Parking’s going to be a nightmare it’s so bad now and it’s not even opened.

Claire Lewis wrote: “Dangerous road already, too many cars and not enough spaces, this can only add to the issue surely?”

Ruth John added: "I echo the concerns. It's amazing, but is an accident waiting to happen already.

Leigh-Anne Jones said: “There’s three car parks very close by as in the Premier Inn, the business centre and the doctors’ surgery.

“They should open up at least one to the public then issue solved."

Stacy Parfitt added: “I went along there with cars parked both sides, traffic from the other direction and cars coming from the drive-through coffee shop. Complete madness."

Lynne Williams said: “It’s crazy. With the amount of parked vehicles, exiting Academy’s drive-thru is dangerous not having suitable visibility.

“An accident will happen or people will be deterred from using the drive-thu.

Daniel Quick said the development was “fantastic, but we need a car park urgently. Incredibly dangerous with cars parked on both sides on a road that is already narrowed with a kerb extended out.”

Vale and Barry Town Council, Buttrills ward councillor, Ian Johnson said: “I am very pleased at the success of the opening weekend of the Goodsheds.

“We all know that it’s been a challenging year, so it was great news that they were able to bring everything together to open before the late summer bank holiday weekend.

“Unfortunately, with success comes other challenges, particularly parking around Hood Road – something which I raised at the planning meeting back in early 2019.

“Hood Road needs clear instructions about where people can and can’t park, allowing traffic to flow freely between Broad Street and the Waterfront.

“Alternative parking needs to be clearly signposted so that people know it’s for Goodsheds customers, that it’s free and the opening times.

“If those aren’t made clear, then customers won’t use it.

“Hopefully, these teething problems will be quickly resolved, and we can welcome this exciting addition to Barry.”

A Vale council spokesman said: “The council is aware of this problem and steps are being taken to address it.

“Proposals for an on-street parking management scheme in this area have been submitted as part of the Goodsheds development and that plan is currently being considered by the council’s highways team.

“Should it prove acceptable, a legal process will follow and the plan will be implemented.”
