The Vale of Glamorgan Council has agreed a package of investment to support the recovery of our town centres in Barry, Penarth, Cowbridge, and Llantwit Major.

The investment of more than £400,000 will help deliver measures that facilitate trade and economic recovery; and, provide a safer and more welcoming environment for visitors, shoppers and workers within our town centres.

The council has commissioned urban design consultants Roberts Limbrick to develop a menu of options for public realm enhancements focusing on the High Street/Broad Street and Holton Road shopping areas in Barry and the main shopping areas in Cowbridge, Llantwit Major and Penarth.

The projects are to be delivered by the end of March 2021.

This investment goes hand in hand in with a strategic marketing campaign being launched shortly, a key strand of which is aimed at encouraging citizens to support our town centre businesses by shopping locally and safely.

Vale council cabinet member for education and regeneration, Cllr Lis Burnett said: “This investment will give a welcome boost to our town centres as we navigate our way through the covid-19 recovery period.

"Our town centres are at the very heart of our local communities and this investment by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Welsh Government (Targeted Regeneration Investment) is recognition of the critical role they play in driving our local economy.”

Chris Gentle, of Roberts Limbrick, said: “We are very pleased to be assisting the Vale of Glamorgan in this important project.

"Our team, including Chris Jones and Highgate Transportation, see a real opportunity here to positively change how we use our town centres through the creation of safer pedestrian environments and social spaces.

"Our brief is to not only to look at the now, but to help set a series of project types which can inform the vision and direction of any future enhancements and improvements within the study areas.”
