AN INSPIRATIONAL Penarth man has completed 300 miles’ of cycling around the Vale in September to raise money in memory of friends and relatives who have passed away.

Tom Bourne, aged 76, said he had all but given up on plans for a huge cycling fundraising effort this year, but after seeing an article on Vale doctor Professor Richard Adams last month, he says he was inspired to get back on the saddle.

“Bereavement through cancer has hit my family hard and I wanted to do something big to raise money,” he said, reflecting on his achievement.

“I had planned to cycle from Haverfordwest to Chepstow, but I knew it would take six months of training and that wasn’t possible for me during the pandemic.

“I had given up until next year, but then I saw Professor Adams’ story and I realised I could still do something.”

With few breaks and very little training, Mr Bourne clocked up 323 miles by yesterday (September 29) in the glorious sunshine, and the £566 raised so far will go to Cancer Research.

“My father-in-law Edwin passed away in May 2016 with cancer, as did my sister Barbara in 2017, and my wife’s brother John in March this year.

“My good friend, Gwyn Griffiths, also died with the disease in April.

Penarth Times:

“I know Cancer Research, like so many other charities, are really struggling at the moment.

“The last time I cycled very long distances was when I was young, so I’m a little sore but I’ve been pleased with how I’ve coped.

“I feel very fortunate to have been able to do those miles and see the beautiful Vale. Many parts I hadn’t come across before.

“I’m delighted I’ve surpassed my target by £300, but any further donations would be gratefully appreciated.”
