PENARTH traders have teamed up for a campaign they hope will instil some confidence in customers to flock to the town.

Penarth has signed up for this autumn’s ‘Totally Locally Fiver Fest’- a national celebration of independent shops and businesses.

Known for its ability to preserve its independent stores, traders say the need to shop locally has never been more important than it is in Penarth right now, after the Vale entered a second lockdown last week.

Forty-seven indie shops, cafes and businesses in Penarth will be taking part in the campaign which runs from October 10-24, and they will all have a £5 offer available.

‘We want this to be a real catalyst’

Mel Griffin, who owns Griffin Books and has been a key organiser in the scheme, said: “During lockdown local businesses have worked tirelessly to adapt their services and look after their customers, for example creating an online presence or introducing free delivery.

“The majority of us live locally and spend locally ourselves, so every fiver you spend during this Fiver Fest fortnight has a much wider benefit than at first appears. Now more than ever we need your support to keep the town thriving.”

While most traders have praised the scheme, many have questioned its ability to make an impact on shopping habits in the long term.

Hollie Aldridge, who works alongside Ms Griffin, said: “I think that’s the key. We want this to be a catalyst to get people into the shops first and make people aware. Then it’s down to the stores to win them over and keep those customers.”

Based on figures calculated by Totally Locally - the grass-roots High Street organisation behind the campaign - if every adult in Penarth spent just £5 per week in their local independent shops and businesses, it would mean £4.3 million per year going directly into the local economy.

Angelina Hall, chair of Penarth Business Group and co-owner of Glass by Design, said: “Our local community has been fantastic in supporting us. This is our way of offering our thanks with some fantastic £5 offers.

“Come and be a tourist in your own town and explore it with new eyes. Walk through doors you normally pass - you might just discover there is so much more we have to offer than you ever thought.”

John Davies, co-editor of Penarth View who has spent time working with businesses to help them through lockdown, added: “Given we are in a local lockdown and there might even be another one down the line, why not get out and support your local stores now? You can’t go to Cardiff. You might find something you weren’t expecting.
