DINAS Powys community council has announced that this year's Remembrance Sunday event has been called off due to coronavirus concerns.

They say the decision has been made following advice from the government and the Royal British Legion (RBL).

There will be no service at the War Memorial on November 8, or on Remembrance Day on November 11.

Organisations are asked to lay wreaths, when it is convenient and safe, at the War Memorial, between Sunday November 8 and 11am on Wednesday November 11.

Dinas council has urged residents to check with local churches about other socially-distanced events.

They have also encouraged people to stand at the door in a collective remembrance on Sunday November 8 at 11am.

Poppy Appeal 2020: The launch date is Thursday 22 October 2020

The 'Silent Soldier' will be installed on the Twyn during the week commencing Monday October 19.

"The RBL trough on the Twyn will be prepared before this date, and you are invited to place Remembrance crosses in the trough," Cllr John Fanshaw said.

Collection boxes and poppies

These will be available, but it was suggested that they be placed on tables, and that collectors do not closely interact with the public.

The RBL are campaigning to encourage online donations, and poppies be purchased by post or “virtually.”
