FROM the Archive this week features a scene from Holton Road.

Following the introduction of the motor car, shoppers in Holton Road still had the tendency to meander around in the middle of the road.

Around the time this photograph was taken in the 1920's a pedestrian was hurt while crossing Holton Road.

At 10pm Mr Thomas Carter a dock joiner had just left the fish and chip bar on Holton Road when he noticed a motor car approaching at a fast speed.

Caught in the middle of the road Mr Thomas was hit by the offside front wheel.

In court Mr Herbert Montague Hicks, the driver, stated Mr Thomas stopped moving when he sounded his horn and he attempted to avoid collision.

Witness Mr W. Buckland greengrocer, Holton Road confirmed the speed of the vehicle.

The victim Mr Thomas appeared in court on crutches.

Mr Herbert Montague Hicks was fined £5 for negligent driving.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
